Making Something (08/26/2025)

The first version of the S3RC reactor chamber. A bright, cyan-colored star core is in the middle of the screen.

Currently, I have a fair idea of what I'd like S3RC to achieve, but I've got no idea what complex form the P&C will take.

To tackle this, I've started building the reactor mechanics. I'll flesh out the technical side of things, while the conceptual side takes shape - the technical side is my biggest concern now, since the conversion to Unity2D is so insane. I figured I should explain my decisions behind the heart of the facility - the Subspace Reactor Unit 3 (or SRC3 for short).

This reactor simulation is designed largely around exhibition-specific play. I've chosen to have the simulation expanded as an adventure game, because it'll soon give me the opportunity to work with Unity2D, so that it can easily be adapted to Android - if I decide to market the Unity version following its completion. With my appeal to incremental games, I'm interested in the idea of controlling the enivronment to help the protagonist. You're not the character in the game - you're just there to help the facility.

So, with this, I decided to use reactor maintenance as the main mechanic. I needed a way of communicating this to the player, and looked at a variety of fun ideas - my favorites being a small artificial neutron star, a futuristic reactor chamber, a first-person perspective camera, and a carpeted, ICSCS-like control room. While I'm trying to create the control room, getting it to work well was nasty - sure, the cutscenes included it, but I'd probably add that to Landmark Edition. The neutron star, however, has its shockwaves like an aura.

The 2021 version of Garamond Research Facility. This chamber looks very similar to the current GRF Reimagined game.

I looked at PrismaStudios' Garamond Research Facility: Reimagined. It seems to be most familiar for having a bite-sized chamber, small enough to bear two large jumbotrons. I want my version of the chamber to appear dark - it represents electricity, the energy that powers the world. The SRC3 essentially uses you to make its way through space. So, the Subspace Reactor's based around GRF to communicate power and discipline - I'd like to keep some violence away from the game. Hopefully, people don't think the SRC3's on its way to beat the upcoming QSSNL.
